Our week in Umbria will be at La Ghirlanda, located in the Umbrian hills, with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Located next to the borgo of Saragano, la Ghirlanda is 15 km from the medieval town of Todi and 25 km from Spoletto and Perugia. This elegant hotel is owned and managed by the Count and Countessa Pongelli Benedettoni, who produce wine and olive oil on their estate. Once used as a hunting lodge, the estate has been in the family since the 1920’s. All of the beautifully appointed 12 bedrooms are accommodated with ensuite bathrooms. The warm and welcoming staff goes above and beyond to see to every detail. The hotel and its surroundings are a perfect venue for painting! This region is known for it’s rolling hills, quaint medieval towns and open, welcoming residents.

Mornings at La Ghirlanda begin with a wonderful breakfast buffet which includes homemade jams, yogurt, honey, cold meats, local cheeses, fruit, cereals, and more. Gourmet lunches and dinners feature typical cuisine of the region, and include locally produced wine and olive oil.

Our group will rendezvous in Rome on September 21 and shuttle from there to our location in Umbria.

Workshop Description

Painting outdoors, and using simple still life objects as your subjects, you’ll begin the workshop with an in-depth exploration of colour, and its extraordinary ability to create glowing passages through the manipulation of hue, temperature, and tone.  You’ll learn how to mix and layer multiple colours to create exciting visual vibrations, and how to use a simple palette to create a harmonious, unified painting.

Next you’ll break down composition into abstract, shape-based elements, discovering how to edit and simplify the complexity of a still life or a landscape into manageable parts.  Each part should work in the service of your concept, and you’ll learn how to confidently modify them to make that happen.

And, finally, you’ll paint a clothed model en plein air.  This will be an opportunity to apply your colour and composition strategies to the task of depicting a person surrounded by the colours and reflected light of the Italian landscape.  You’ll discover how to capture accurate proportions without pencils or grids, and how to find the simple gesture at the heart of even the most complex pose.

Ingrid’s strength as an instructor is her ability to deconstruct the complexity of the painting process into logical, manageable parts.  She will provide ample group and one-on-one demonstrations throughout the week to ensure that each painter progresses in both understanding and skill.  And, since Ingrid has a deep commitment to best practises for artists, you’ll come away with concrete methods for keeping yourself and your environment healthy on your art journey.

This workshop is suitable for intermediate to advanced painters working in oils or acrylics.
