Join mixed media artist and professional calligrapher Caitlin Dundon for this fun and fantastic workshop, working with collage, acrylic painting and stenciling techniques. Students will begin with simple techniques for preparing your background versus diving straight into collage. Discover the magical world of mixed media layering with pattern stencils and stamps to create texture and pattern. Learn how to work with tinted gels for a more antique or faux encaustic look. Work abstractly or with the project demonstrated themes of sailboat or houses or choose your own theme. Learn how to work with alphabet stencils and rubber stamps to stencil, stamp and collage lettering to add sentiment in the form of a word or words to your collage, even try your hand at handmade lettering or calligraphy using the instructor’s favorite tools: calligraphy dip pen, paintbrush, brush pen, Posca paint pens, PITT pens or even China markers. There are no mistakes in this workshop, just a fabulous exploration of mixed media techniques while creating some beautiful artwork.

Students should bring:

water container

brushes (1/2” flat, 1” flat, smaller pointed detail brushes)

paper towels

baby wipes

Qty. 2* cradled wood panels 11” x 14”, (instructor preferred) or canvas panels (cradled or flat)  plus 2 sheets watercolor paper 140 lb or heavier cut to 11” x 14”

3-4 colors of heavy body or fluid acrylics

acrylic white gesso

acrylic soft gel (matte is preferred)

optional: bring your own collage ephemera (magazine images, black and white or color Xeroxes or laser prints (no inkjet prints)

use of additional colors of heavy body and fluid acrylic paints

black gesso

*For convenience, students may choose to work on 4 sheets of watercolor paper instead of bringing any wood or canvas panels

ABOUT Caitlin Dundon

Caitlin Dundon is a mixed media artist, a professional calligrapher, and instructor with over 20 years of experience. Known for her signature style of calligraphy combined with her colorful paintings, she creates custom pieces for individuals and corporate commissions. She’s been published and written articles for Somerset Studio and Art Journaling magazines and been featured in the international calligraphy publication Letter Arts. She has taught at mixed media and calligraphy conferences throughout the United States and Canada including Art & Soul, Art Unraveled, Art is You, Letters of Joy, Ghost Ranch, Mendocino Art Center and the University of Washington. Her art has also been licensed for printing and manufacturing and has been sold at Target, Walmart and Kohl’s. Her new book, The Painted Word: Mixed Media Lettering Techniques (Schiffer Publishing) has been receiving rave reviews. Dundon lives in Seattle.
