Patrick Lee-Painting with Imagination & Abstraction, 3-Day Workshop, August 13-15, 2019
Painting with Imagination & Abstraction
Instructor: Patrick Lee
This workshop is designed to help each person get closer to something authentic and creative in their work – As Frank Webb said, “The world doesn’t necessarily need another pretty picture – what it sorely needs is a creative concept.”(paraphrase). I try to get myself, and my students, to a place of personal expression and interpretation through exercises that release the subconscious (true self), unfettered by the baggage of how things “should” look. We do this by interpreting line, shape, value, and color, and molding them to our concept – that that strong idea that impels us to create. We can begin a search for subjects or ideas through exercises in:
-Improvisation in line
-improvisation in value
-the creative use of photo references
-the creative use (borrowing) from the wealth of art history
I believe that creativity precedes skill, but that skill in drawing, composition, simplification, and feeling are necessary to coherent expression.
Patrick Lee takes a unique creative approach to making paintings in the studio and en plein air. He draws heavily on intuition and imagination to develop an image, often altering the drawing, color, and spatial relationships to create a mood and express a feeling about the subject. This often leads to strong elements of abstraction and suggestion in his work, rather than explicit detail. This gives the viewer an opportunity to connect with each piece in their own way, inviting them to let their own imaginations make personal associations and connections.
