Join Winslow Art Center and award-winning artist Michele Usibelli for an unforgettable plein air painting adventure in Umbria, Italy, May 17-24, 2018. Winslow Art Center is your expert in organizing the best Italian Plein Air painting workshops! Martha Jordan, owner of Winslow Art Center, has been conducting successful painting adventures in Italy for over five years. and has established relationships with some of Italy’s best hotels and restaurants.
Our week in Umbria will be at La Ghirlanda, located in the Umbrian hills, with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Located next to the borgo of Saragano, la Ghirlanda is 15 km from the medieval town of Todi and 25 km from Spoletto and Perugia. This elegant hotel is owned and managed by the Count and Countessa Pongelli Benedettoni, who produce wine and olive oil on their estate. Once used as a hunting lodge, the estate has been in the family since the 1920’s. All of the beautifully appointed 12 bedrooms are accommodated with ensuite bathrooms. The warm and welcoming staff goes above and beyond to see to every detail. The hotel and its surroundings are a perfect venue for painting! This region is known for it’s rolling hills, quaint medieval towns and open, welcoming residents.
Mornings at La Ghirlanda begin with a wonderful breakfast buffet which includes homemade jams, yogurt, honey, cold meats, local cheeses, fruit, cereals, and more. Gourmet lunches and dinners feature typical cuisine of the region, and include locally produced wine and olive oil.
This workshop is ideally suited for those who have some painting experience and now want to break into plein air painting, or for those who simply want the thrill of painting the Italian landscape, with the added benefit of guidance from an instructor. All levels of expertise are welcome. You’ll be part of a close knit Italian “art colony” as you benefit from demonstrations and lectures, personal and group critiques, and frequent art chats. Participants may paint in oil, acrylic, pastel and gouache. Demonstrations and instruction will focus on the essentials steps of plein air painting. The class will start with an abbreviated lecture on the fundamentals of sound painting, including a discussion of drawing, value, design and color. Michele will also do a short demo each morning and then we will spend the day painting the natural beauty of Umbria. This region is known for it’s rolling hills, quaint medieval towns and open, welcoming residents.
We will paint each day from 9:00am-12:00pm and in the afternoons from 3:30pm to 6:00pm, to take advantage of the beautiful, Italian light.
